Grass care in spring

Do you like the blog? Let us know.

Spring is just around the corner. Time to winterize the grasses and prepare them for the warm season. The type of grass determines the care.

We have summarized the most important points for grass care in spring and give tips for garden design with the airy grasses.

Cutting deciduous grasses

Most ornamental grasses are deciduous. This means that they turn straw-colored in the fall and slowly usher in the colder season. Tying them together in the fall creates a decorative winter ornament that serves a very practical purpose: It provides the grasses with winter protection, preventing moisture from getting inside the plant and freezing there. In spring at the latest, when the new shoots appear, it is time to cut the grasses just above the ground. This makes room for the fresh greenery and allows the grasses to sprout again.

Maintenance pruning of evergreen grasses

Evergreen grasses are not cut back roughly, but only receive a maintenance cut if necessary. In spring, all stems and leaf tips damaged by frost are removed. This allows the grasses to sprout healthily again and bring fresh green to the garden.

Garden design with airy grasses

Grasses are very versatile in the garden. Unlike most perennials, grasses impress with their delicate aesthetics. The green stems bend picturesquely in the wind and add a touch of green to the garden without overloading it. At the same time, the delicate grasses combine well with other plants. Together with flowering perennials, for example, the bed is loosened up in a natural way. But even planted as a whole group, the grasses create a unique and modern touch in the garden.

Privacy screen with grasses

Ornamental grasses have dense stems and usually grow upright. This is why they are also ideal as a natural privacy screen or as a boundary between different garden areas. Grasses look particularly attractive in modern plant troughs, which are deliberately placed to separate the garden or patio and provide airy protection from unwanted glances.
