Fighting weeds in the lawn

Do you like the blog? Please let us know.

Many a garden owner wants a beautiful, green lawn. Weeds have no place in it, but sometimes they spread rapidly. We explain how to prevent weeds and give tips on how to remove and avoid unwanted weeds.

How do weeds spread?

Unwelcome weeds reproduce in various ways. Many weeds are carried by the wind, while other weeds, such as clover, are creeping weeds that cover the ground with wide runners. Root weeds are particularly insidious: they spread underground and disrupt the development of the lawn. But all weeds have one thing in common: the quicker you do something about them, the quicker and easier it is to get rid of them and enjoy a healthy, green carpet.

Prevention of weeds

As a general rule, optimum lawn care makes the lawn robust and less susceptible to weeds, moss, diseases and other pests. Most native weeds only become a problem if the lawn is not supplied with sufficient nutrients. For example, the development of clover in the lawn is a sure sign that the lawn is not receiving enough nutrients. Fertilizing the lawn is therefore an important first step in preventing weeds. At the same time, weeds react sensitively to being cut, which is why regular mowing of the lawn is another important aspect of lawn care and weed prevention.

The most important tips for optimum lawn care.

Lawn robot

Regular use of a robotic mower has a positive effect on the quality of the lawn. The robots recommended by our partner GardenTec are mulching mowers, which cut the mown grass so finely that no clippings need to be disposed of. These are distributed over the lawn and thus return to the nutrient cycle, fertilizing the soil in a natural way. The increasingly dense lawn also displaces moss. In addition to the positive effect on the lawn, an Automower saves time and takes over the gardening work. However, it is important to note that the use of an Automower requires intensive lawn care to ensure that foreign grasses have no chance of becoming established.

Effective weed control

Individual weeds can be removed by hand. However, care must be taken to ensure that the weeds are removed together with their roots so that they do not sprout again. If the lawn is infested with weeds over a large area, it is worth using a special weed killer for lawns. The weeds will die and the growth of the lawn will not be affected. Subsequent scarifying of the lawn removes the dead weeds. Scarifying makes it necessary to overseed and fertilize the lawn so that the green carpet can sprout again optimally and grow back densely. At the same time, the fertilizer provides the lawn with the necessary nutrients and prevents weeds from spreading again.

The most important tips for preventing and controlling weeds in the lawn - we summarize:

  • Weeds are often a sign of nutrient deficiency
  • Weeds can be prevented by regular fertilizing and mowing
  • Individual weeds and their roots can be easily removed by hand
  • Special weed killers for lawns kill the weeds without harming the lawn
  • After weed control with a weed killer, fertilization prevents weeds from spreading again
