The plane tree family includes eight different species. The three best known are the American plane tree (Platanus occidentalis), the maple plane tree (Platanus x hispanica) and the oriental plane tree (Platanus orientalis). The plane trees like both sunny and semi-shady spots. The plane tree has no particular demands on the soil. It can be loamy, sandy or even slightly acidic or alkaline. They are popular shade providers and can easily be shaped into the desired form.
What should be considered when pruning the plane trees?
Sycamore trees are very tolerant of pruning, which means that the crown can be shaped according to taste - whether simple or strictly shaped. Branches that do not match the direction of growth can simply be removed. However, the main branches should not be pruned. Vertical new shoots should be removed completely. Dry and broken branches can be removed at any time.
Where do I have to cut the branches of the plane tree?
It should always be cut above a bud.
When do I have to cut?
Due to their strong growth, plane trees should be pruned at least twice a year during the vegetation break. Pruning is important because the plane trees grow up to 70 cm each year. Just before winter (around the beginning of November after leaf fall), pruning should not be forgotten due to the coming snow. This prevents the plane tree from collapsing under the weight of the snow. Then before spring begins, around February, a training pruning can be carried out.
Which tool should I use for cutting?
Branch or hedge shears are suitable pruning tools.
Do I need special equipment for pruning?
If you are generally sensitive to pollen or grasses, you should wear a face mask while cutting. The dust on the leaves could trigger allergies.
When pruning, a ladder is usually required to gain access to all branches. This should have a secure footing. If a ladder is not sufficient and it is necessary to climb the tree, we strongly recommend hiring a professional. With the appropriate safety gear and the necessary special training, pruning on larger trees can be carried out safely.
Pruning the plantains in the garden villa
The pruning of the plane trees in our show garden in Aathal has just taken place. During the winter break, Urs Bertschinger has enough time for the necessary maintenance and care tasks. He was hard at work putting the plane trees back in order and protecting them from the winter. He also pruned the hydrangeas.
