How the overflow pool works - design meets technology

Do you like the blog? Please let us know.

The dream of having your own pool is often clouded by questions. How do I maintain it properly? What costs will I incur? What type of pool is suitable for my garden and how do skimmers or overflow pools work? Thanks to their design, infinity pools in particular have become a dream property for many homeowners. Pools with overflow pools offer a combination of high-end design, technical sophistication and functional added value. We tell you what makes an overflow pool so special, how it works and why it fits perfectly into stylish gardens.

What is an overflow basin?

Infinity pools are familiar from luxury holiday resorts or Hollywood films. The water seems to flow into infinity or run directly into the sea. This is exactly what makes the aesthetics of an infinity pool so special. Basically, an overflow pool is a pool in which the water surface is exactly flush with the surrounding ground or pool deck.

The water runs continuously over the so-called overflow edge and is channelled into a gutter, where it is filtered and runs back into the pool. The result is a perfectly calm water surface, a particularly sophisticated look and technically advanced water treatment, often combined with a breathtaking view.

In contrast to conventional skimmer pools, where the water is a few centimetres below the edge of the pool, an overflow pool has a mirror-smooth water surface. This makes a pool with an overflow pool a true architectural work of art in the garden.

How an overflow pool works - explained briefly and concisely

The centrepiece of an overflow pool is the overflow channel. This can extend around the entire pool or only exist on one or more sides. If this overflow channel is only located on a single side, preferably towards the horizon, it is referred to as an infinity pool.

The water flows continuously over the edge into the channel, from there into the equalisation tank, where it is collected and then pumped back through the filter system via inlet nozzles. You get better pool hydraulics, without water loss and with a unique aesthetic.

This mode of operation not only has aesthetic advantages, but also improves water circulation. In this case, there are several advantages compared to a skimmer:

  • Improved water hygiene: Dirt, leaves or sun cream residues are removed immediately and reliably.
  • Even distribution of disinfectants: Chlorine or other agents are distributed more evenly, which improves the water quality.
  • Calm water level: Especially for swimmers or in counter-current systems, a pleasantly even surface is created without disturbing wave reflection.

From aesthetics to acoustics - another highlight for your garden

In addition to the visual elegance that an overflow basin offers, it also brings a very special acoustic quality to the garden. As the water flows over the overflow edge into the channel in a continuous water cycle, a calming, natural background noise is created. It can be compared to a small fountain and turns any garden into a true oasis of well-being.

Especially in modern gardens, where clear lines and tranquillity dominate, this gentle sound is a lively yet unobtrusive contrast.

Pool with overflow channel or skimmer pool: The direct comparison

Overflow and skimmer pools are the two most common systems for pools, which differ in terms of how they work, but also in terms of quality and cost.

The skimmer drains the water through an inlet flap, which is located below the edge of the pool to automatically adjust the water level. From there, the water flows back into the pool through a filter system. The disadvantage is that the water circulation is not completely even.

In the overflow pool, the water drains over the edge into the overflow channel and thus achieves optimum water flow through the filter, before returning to the pool after being cleaned.

An overflow pool requires more effort, precision and technical realisation and is therefore more expensive. However, you are rewarded with a visually and functionally superior pool experience with an infinity effect.

Planning and construction: precision and expertise are key here

An overflow pool cannot be built in the garden as quickly as a skimmer pool. It requires work that is accurate to the millimetre. To ensure that the water flows cleanly over the edge, the entire pool must be perfectly levelled. Projects with overflow pools should therefore be planned and realised with experienced gardening and pool professionals in order to achieve the desired result.

At egli jona, we have made a name for ourselves in this industry and have already realised numerous overflow pools. The projects range from compact design solutions to extensive luxury projects. What does an overflow pool cost?

The costs for overflow pools depend on the respective project and the following factors:

  • Size and shape of the pool
  • Design of the overflow channel (all-round or one-sided)
  • Materials and technology
  • Earthworks and installation
  • Optional accessories such as lighting, cover, heating or counter-current system

As a rough guide, an overflow pool is around 30-40 % more expensive than a classic skimmer pool.
