A home is more than just four walls. It’s the feeling of arriving as you step onto the path to your front door. It’s the gentle sound of water and the play of light and shadow beneath solitary trees. For this project, we were able to implement the landscaping for the entire Jonagold residential development in Kempraten. A place was created here that combines modern aesthetics with natural security.
In our last post, while we were discussing exclusive roof terraces of the development Having illuminated this, we will now turn our attention to the centrepiece of the development: the generous outdoor space design. The residential complex is a prime example of how modern architecture is brought to life through sensitive environmental design.
Welcoming architecture meets nature-inspired aesthetics
The Jonagold residential development captivates with its clean, modern lines. To echo this architectural style while simultaneously creating a warm atmosphere, a variety of concrete elements have been incorporated. These form the structural backbone of the development and run through the site like a common thread.
But concrete doesn't have to feel cool. In combination with lush, multi-layered planting, exciting contrasts are created. The privacy screen appears particularly elegant: instead of leaving the massive walls as they are, delicate climbing structures are used. Climbing plants such as the fragrant Clematis montana or the classic honeysuckle (Lonicera caprifolium) transform functional walls into living, green curtains that change their appearance with the seasons.
The fountain: a centre of peace and meeting
Anyone entering the settlement through one of the two entrances immediately notices: space has been created here for people to meet. The central element and a visual highlight is the modern fair-faced concrete fountain. It presides over a distinctive wild-stone paving, which provides a charming contrast to the otherwise linear design.
The gentle flow of the water acts as a natural silencer against the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's a place to pause, take a deep breath, and enjoy the tranquility of its exclusive location in Kempraten. Despite its central connection, the Jonagold residential development feels like a private oasis, far removed from the urban hustle and bustle.
Space for community: Where neighbourhood comes to life
Successful environmental design is characterised by its ability to bring people together. Cosy seating nooks can be found throughout the entire development. Small walls, integrated into the design, not only serve for terracing but also invite people to linger and chat with neighbours as informal seating.
A special highlight for young and old is located at the rear of the development: a large-scale game of Nine Men's Morris set into the ground. It symbolises the playful ease that has been brought to this outdoor space. The playground is flanked by two elegant, anthracite-coloured seating stones. These modern sculptures are not only functional but also make a clear design statement within the green area.
Seating for shared moments
The Plant World: A Botanical Echo of the Name
The name of the Jonagold housing development says it all. To create a direct link to the identity of the place, we've incorporated various apple trees into the planting. Alongside the classic winter apple ‘Jonagold’, you'll also find ornamental apples such as ‘Evereste’ and ‘Brouwers Beauty’. In spring, they delight with a sea of white and pink blossoms, and in autumn, with vibrant fruits.
The underplanting was conceived as a harmonious interplay of grasses and perennials. Silver feather grass (Stipa calamagrostis ‘Algäu’) and coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) provide structure and colour, while flowering sage and gaura add delicate accents in violet and white-pink. At the same time, large solitary trees such as the Hungarian silver linden offer natural shade on hot summer days.
A reference project with character
The landscape design for the Jonagold residential development demonstrates that modern living concepts and ecological considerations can go hand in hand. With the completion of the outdoor areas in Kempraten, we were able to prove the importance of holistic planning in collaboration with architects and landscape designers. From the private roof terrace to the communal mill game – every detail contributes to the Jonagold residential development becoming a place with a soul.
