Animal pests are a problem for beautiful, green lawns. We show you the most common pests and explain how to combat them effectively and prevent them at the same time.
Grubs - larvae of beetles
Grubs are the larvae of beetles that appear as thick, white worms. The beetles' eggs develop into voracious larvae, which eat the roots of the grass blades and thus damage the lawn. With the exception of the larvae of the rose chafer and rhinoceros beetle, all grubs are harmful to the lawn and should be controlled. The most common is the garden chafer, whose larvae feed on grass roots and cause bare patches in the lawn or damage entire lawns.
That works: The cheapest, but also most time-consuming option is to collect the grubs. After a heavy rain or after watering the lawn, the grubs burrow upwards and are easy to collect. However, nematode control is also a less costly method for grubs. This biological control kills the grubs within two to three days.
Prevention of pests in the lawn
A healthy and well-maintained lawn is the key to preventing pests. A dense sward makes it difficult for female beetles in particular to lay their eggs, from which the harmful larvae later hatch. Bare patches in the lawn have a higher soil temperature, which attracts the female beetles and favours egg laying. To prevent these annoying pests, the lawn requires a minimum level of care. A nutrient-rich soil and regular mowing are the most important prerequisites for a healthy lawn.
